Our Mission

     The Grouchy Bear Foundation was established in May of 2000 to give special bears (Grouchy Bears) to children who suffer with cancer. Our son, Kenny Purkey was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in March of 1999. His classmates gave him a stuffed bear while he was hospitalized. He created a personality to this bear and a new name, "Grouchy". While receiving treatment Kenny would use this special bear as a release for some of the frustrations he would experience. Over time we would have other kids ask if they could have a bear to play with. That is how we started. Our goal is to give Grouchy Bears to as many kids with cancer as we can. We are a 501 C 3 tax deductible organization. Kenny has written an explanation of how he used his Grouchy during his illness.
